Handmaid’s Tale Book by Margaret Atwood

There is no doubt that The Handmaid’s Tale Book by Margaret Atwood is one great read that you shouldn’t miss. Although there already is a tv series adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale, reading the book online or offline through your mobile device might be worthwhile. Personally I prefer to read the book first before watching the movie or tv adaptation of it so I will have a better grasp of what the story is about. Also, Margaret Atwood is a very much respected author that draw so many readers especially with her touch of feminism. So what is Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale book about? Let’s now begin!

Things weren’t the same as it is at present and things flipped like crazy. It is the time where the air is heavily polluted with toxins that made women infertile. Women were restricted from learning how to read and instructions where made through images or pictures. A life that practices extreme fundamentalism – the life of handmaids were a living hell.

Offred lived a normal life having a husband and child but things turned south when the Republic of Gilead came to power. She became a handmaid and restricted her of doing things that she used to. Deprived of freedom even for knowledge and who to choose to love, she became a subject of her commander. Like the rest of the handmaids, she is valued for the fertility of her ovaries. She lies with her commander and prays to get pregnant, that’s not all – she has to do unimaginable things ruled by the Puritan Order.

It may be a book that is way too extreme to imagine to become a reality. The setting started with Massachusetts which apparently values women’s reproductive rights. Although the state may have adequate history of fundamentalist Christians but it isn’t just the right setting for Margaret Atwood’s plot. Aside from that, I would like to say that her book must have been inspired by the religiosity of the Reagan presidency to which the administration preferred renewal and turning back to old values. Those old values that made America great must be renewed. The dystopian society in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale plot may let other readers feel it just to unrealistic and extreme.

More are even loving to watch The Handmaid’s Tale series online or offline. But what makes this novel by Margaret Atwood a hit? For most, the future is provoking and scary. Birth control, rights are diminished, and the religious order is the total law of the land. It may sound far-fetch but many readers are seeing the synonymity of such things happening today.

The laws about abortion and reproductive freedom among women, the fundamentalism of most religious communities, the suppression and selection of news, and many other things. What if these things will eventually become a total experience for most and the world will become an extreme fundamentalist government? That is scary as hell. The book also depicts feminism although it strictly is not. It also tells about how diversity and freedom is important and the world would be a total grim if deprived of it.

It is a dark and horrible read. A good reading experience that brings us to realize how hard the lives of the handmaids are. Margaret Atwood choose a topic and invokes fear among us – of what is coming in the near future. So eventful, the twist, the plot is beautifully built and are loved by so many. The Handmaid’s Tale TV series may have captured our hearts but I would say the book says and tells everything about it. There are few criticisms and most book readers can and able to live with it. Many are saying that Margaret Atwood lacks the element of putting quotations and parenthesis and making it harder to piece up which character is talking. Repetition of thinking about inanimate objects are obviously irritating. I noticed that some readers are annoyed in a way that she write of constantly baiting and eventually does not reveal what has yet to be known.

Her writing style is often criticized for having or lacking of explanation and leave the readers blind and groping for answers.
